2023 PLANTS & WILDLFOWERS

Wednesday, June 28 - Plants & Wildflowers at Hazelwood Lake; 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Join the LRCA's resident wildflower expert and Watershed Stewardship Technician Jessie McFadden for a hike of Hazelwood Lake in search of wildflowers and other plants of interest. The cultural significance of traditional Medicine to the Indigenous Peoples of our region will also be discussed.

2023 FALL MUSHROOM HIKE

September 10th

10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Hazelwood Lake Conservation Area

Join the LRCA and Dr. Leonard Hutchison of Lakehead University for our extremely popular mushroom identification program. Participants will meet at Hazelwood Lake Conservation Area where Dr. Hutchison will give an overview of the fungi found in the area, followed by a guided identification hike. Please note that typically harvesting of any kind in a Conservation Area is prohibited; however, it will be allowed for fungi during this event for identification purposes.

2023 SANDHILL CRANE FESTIVAL

2023 SANDHILL CRANE FESTIVAL

September 22nd

Monday, September 11 - Friday, September 22

The Sandhill Crane Festival is a self-drive, self-guided tour around three key locations in the Slate River Valley in Neebing and Oliver Paipoonge. The goal is to try and see the massive flocks of Sandhill Cranes that are currently migrating through the region. Sandhill Cranes are attracted to the large farmer’s fields in the area, which provides excellent views and lines of sight for observing them. Observations are being collected from Monday, September 11 to Friday, September 22.

2023 NEEBING BIRDING DAY

September 13th

Wednesday, September 13 – Neebing Birding Day; 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Join the LRCA and expert birders for a guided bird hike at the Memory Road trailhead of the James Duncan Memorial Trail in Neebing from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. Following the hike, participants will be invited to listen to a special talk from Cindy Crowe, followed by a sit-spot exercise to allow for individuals with mobility concerns to participate in a birding experience. The cultural significance of birds to the Indigenous Peoples of our region will also be discussed.

2023 FALL WATERFOWL VIEWING DAY

October 07th

The 2023 Fall Waterfowl Viewing Day will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area on Saturday, October 7. Join the LRCA and local expert birder Brian Ratcliff as we guide participants around the Conservation Area in search of migratory birds. No experience is necessary! Be sure to dress appropriately as this event runs rain-or-shine. Be sure to bring your binoculars, cameras and field guides.
