Monday, September 11 - Friday, September 22

The Sandhill Crane Festival is a self-drive, self-guided tour around three key locations in the Slate River Valley in Neebing and Oliver Paipoonge. The goal is to try and see the massive flocks of Sandhill Cranes that are currently migrating through the region. Sandhill Cranes are attracted to the large farmer’s fields in the area, which provides excellent views and lines of sight for observing them. Observations are being collected from Monday, September 11 to Friday, September 22.

ROUTE MAP

We are asking participants to complete the following online observation survey after each outing:

When travelling through the area in search of Sandhill Cranes, please be mindful of the following:

  • Use your hazard lights and turn signals when slowing down and pulling over
  • Be mindful of local traffic
  • DO NOT stop on Highway 61
  • DO NOT trespass onto private property; observations should be made from your vehicle or the side of the road
  • Do not harass wildlife or play calls

Tips:

  • Be sure to bring your binoculars, scopes and bird guides if you have them.
  • If you notice Sandhill Cranes in a field, stop your vehicle, roll down your windows (or exit your vehicle if it’s safe to do so) and LISTEN! Sandhill Cranes make unique calls and sounds, and part of the fun of observation is to hear the birds as well.
  • There are other migratory birds making their way through the area, so be sure to keep your eye on fenceposts, nearby poles, lamps and trees, and of course in the sky.
  • Sign up for free eBird and iNaturalist accounts prior to heading out.

Thank you for submitting your observations!
