Position: Assistant Water Resources Technician

Summer Position: May 8th, 2017 to August 25th, 2017

Reports To: GIS Technician/Planner and Watershed Manager

Location: Thunder Bay

Date: May 8, 2017 to August 25, 2017 (16-week contract)

Wage: $13.00 per hour

General Overview:

The Assistant Water Resources Technician reports to the GIS Technician/Planner and may receive direction from the Watershed Manager.

Working in a team environment, the Assistant Water Resources Technician will assist with the environmental monitoring programs and contribute to on-going studies and projects. Day to day duties of the successful candidate will specialize in the collection, entry and/or analysis of water resources data to support various water quality studies.

This position may require occasional evening and weekend involvement. Hours beyond the normal work week are compensated with time-off in lieu as agreed to with supervisor, in advance when possible.

A valid clean driver’s licence and access to a working vehicle is required.

Duties:

  1. Bathing beach water quality sampling (E. coli):
    • Hazelwood Lake Beach (once per week)
    • Prepare 2017 bathing beach summary report
  2. Assessment of Coldwater Creek Watershed:
    • Review previous watershed reports.
    • Obtain quotes for field water quality sampling program.
    • Review available mapping for the area.
    • Identify possible sample locations.
    • Assess mapping of watershed, land use, soil types, and sample sites.
    • Document flora and fauna at sampling sites.
    • Field water quality sampling.
    • Collection of water samples for laboratory analysis.
    • Prepare outline of new report.
    • Prepare Draft Report.
    • Prepare Final Report.

General

  1. Assist Watershed Manager, GIS Technician/Planner and Water Resource Technologist with general office duties.
  2. Assist with Provincial Water Quality Monitoring Network Program sampling.
  3. Assist with collecting water levels from Provincial Groundwater Monitoring Network wells.
  4. Any other duties as assigned.

Skills Required:

  1. Enrolled in an Environmental Studies program with relevant experience in areas such as water quality, hydrology, water resources and environmental science.
  2. Experience in a variety of field sampling techniques and monitoring protocols an asset.
  3. Working knowledge of handheld GPS equipment would be an asset.
  4. Flora and fauna identification skills.
  5. Knowledge of Fluvial Geomorphology/Hydrology.
  6. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  7. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including: Excel and Word.
  8. Strong oral and written communication skills, including ability in technical report writing.
  9. Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  10. Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal to no supervision.
  11. Must be willing to work outdoors and in adverse weather conditions.
  12. Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence with a clean driving record.
