A naturalist’s paradise, one of the top-ranked birding locations in Ontario.
Hurkett Cove Conservation Area is a unique peninsula formed by sediment deposition from the Wolf River. Surrounded by Provincially Significant Wetlands, the location is excellent for botanizing, fishing, birding, and photography.
In 2005, Andy Bezener of “Birds Ontario” selected Hurkett Cove as one of the top birding sites in Ontario. See songbirds along the trail, raptors overhead, and waterfowl and shorebirds in the Cove or along the Black Bay shore. Choose Hurkett Cove if you are looking for an exciting place to view wildlife or visit for a day trip. Birding experts consider Hurkett Cove Conservation Area to be the “Pelee of the North!”
Some of the bird species that have been observed at Hurkett Cove Conservation Area include the Horned lark, Red Throated Loon, Short-eared Owl, Trumpeter Swan, Bald Eagle, Northern Parula, Cedar Waxwing and many others.
The Conservation Area encompasses several amenities including a pavilion with picnic tables, an EZ Dock kayak launch, and interpretive signage for visitor use.
