McVicar Creek Wetland Assessment
The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is undertaking wetland evaluations within the McVicar Creek Watershed. McVicar Creek is a meandering, shallow banked, fast flowing watercourse that originates north of the City of Thunder Bay and discharges into Lake Superior near Marina Park.
McVicar Creek reacts quickly to rainfall and is considered to be very "peaky". The upper reaches of McVicar Creek, which comprise 84% of the basin, have not yet seen major development. A study of these wetlands has been initiated by the LRCA to determine their importance from both ecological and storm water management perspectives. The McVicar Creek Wetland Evaluation has been awarded to Northern Biosciences by the LRCA.
The study will determine whether the McVicar Creek wetlands fit the definition of a Provincially Significant Wetland and will define the boundaries of wetland complexes. The results will be shared with the City of Thunder Bay, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, the Lakehead Rural Planning Board and the General Public at a meeting to be held at the LRCA Administrative Office at 130 Conservation Road on September 24th, 2015 from 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
