2019 Floodway Maintenance Dredging

2019 Floodway Maintenance Dredging

Posted on July 04th

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) is undertaking maintenance dredging of the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway between the William Street bridge and the Balmoral Street bridge.

The LRCA owns and maintains the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway. The dredging of the Floodway Channel is required to ensure that the Floodway continues to provide riverine flood protection up to the Regional Storm, which is a rainfall event in which 193 millimetres of rain falls in 12-hours.

The dredging work is scheduled to commence July 2, 2019, and is anticipated to be completed by December 31, 2019.

To ensure public safety, areas near the Floodway, including trails within the limits of construction, will be closed for the duration of the work. For your safety, please respect all posted construction signs and stay clear of the work areas and equipment. Your cooperation and patience with this undertaking is appreciated.

FLOOD WARNING - TERMINATION

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has terminated the Flood Warning for the Lakehead Region which included the Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge, Municipality of Neebing, Township of O’Connor and Township of Gillies.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority advises that the Whitefish River and area tributaries have crested overnight and will continue to slowly recede during the day; however, will remain high for some time.

Area gauges recorded between 16 to 83 millimetres of precipitation over the last 48 hours with the highest amounts recorded at the Whitefish River gauge in Nolalu.  The Whitefish River level increased by 1.41 metres over the event.

The public is advised to continue to use extreme caution when travelling in the area as many roads sustained damage and may continue to be unpassable.

Residents who experienced flooding within their homes should use caution when assessing damage due to potential hazards.  Residents who obtain their drinking water from wells should have their water tested prior to use.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) hosted the 2019 Dorion Birding Festival on May 25 & 26.

A huge thanks goes out to the previous Birding Festival Planning Committee who have worked so hard over the past 10 years to provide an excellent birding experience to residents of the Lakehead Watershed. The LRCA is proud to have been able to keep the Festival going for an 11th year.

The LRCA would also like to thank all of the expert guides who volunteered their time to lead the groups and provide their birding expertise; we also acknowledge the support of Enbridge and Parks Canada.

The final, two-day bird count has been determined to total 118 different species, including five new species which have never been previously observed at the Festival. For more details, check out the Festival Bird Count document below.
