New Entrance Sign at Mission!

New Entrance Sign at Mission!

Posted on December 05th

We are proud to unveil a new entrance sign at Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area, one of the most popular Conservation Areas in the Lakehead Region. Local artist Luc Despres of Despres Metal Artwork was commissioned to create the sign.

“This was an important project for us at Despres Metal Artwork as it not only gave us the opportunity to create a new entrance sign for Mission Island Marsh, but to also create a sign that serves as public art in our own community which reinforces the importance of our conservation areas,” says artist Luc Despres. “As an artist I loved working on this particular project because it was completely hand drawn as well as cut freehand, enabling the sculptural vegetation and bird elements to have a more organic look, taking on a life of their own.”

The LRCA also reiterates the importance of the work as local public art. “It was very important for us to have the new entrance sign be created by a local artist,” says LRCA Chair Donna Blunt. “We are so happy with how the sign has turned out.”

Through the use of various vandal-resistant metals, the sign reflects the industrial history of Mission Island and the Conservation Area’s history as the former Fort William Landfill site, while capturing the essence of the flora and fauna of the area in a unique, sculptural way. The hope is that people will appreciate the sign as a work of public art, and that people will be able to recognize and celebrate the fact that it was created by a talented local artist and his team.

2019 Dorion Birding Festival

2019 Dorion Birding Festival

Posted on June 28th

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE LAKEHEAD REGION CONSERVATION AUTHORITY:

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) has been a proud partner of Dorion’s Canyon Country Birding Festival over the past ten years, and Hurkett Cove Conservation Area has played an integral part in the Festival. When the Festival Planning Committee announced that the 2018 Festival would be the last, we knew we had to do something.

The LRCA is therefore extremely proud to announce that we will be taking over the duties of planning and implementing the Festival in the future. We are dedicated to ensuring that the incredible legacy of the Birding Festival is continued, so that Dorion remains the epicentre of premiere birding in Northwestern Ontario and the Lakehead Region.

The LRCA staff that will be in charge of planning and implementing the Festival are Ryan Mackett, Communications Manager, and Ryne Gilliam, Lands Manager. Ryan and Ryne will be forming a planning committee with Rob Swainson, who we will be working closely with to ensure that the Festival continues as similarly as possible to how it has been run in the past. Very soon, Ryan and Ryne will be reaching out to the other organizations that have played a key role in the Festival’s success; Rob will be reaching out to the guides, and we look forward to working with them.

If you are interested in receiving Festival updates, we ask that you please visit the birding page, scroll down and sign up for our birding-specific e-newsletter. Be sure to keep an eye on your junk-mail folders for a confirmation email that you will have to respond to. Our e-newsletters are sent via MailChimp.

We understand that we have large shoes to fill in following in the footsteps of the original Festival Planning Committee, but we are excited to host this exciting event in the years to come. Any inquiries, comments or concerns related to the Festival should be directed to Ryan Mackett, Communications Manager, at ryanm@lakeheadca.com or (807) 344-5857 ext. 228.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority would like to invite you to SAVE THE DATE for the Dorion Birding Festival, May 25th and 26th, 2019!
