Public Open House: Kaministiquia River Floodplain Mapping Update Study
DATE: March 5, 2020
TIME: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
LOCATION: LRCA Administrative Office Multi-Purpose Room, 130 Conservation Road, City of Thunder Bay
The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) will be hosting a Public Open House on Thursday, March 5, 2020 from 4pm to 7pm regarding the recently completed Kaministiquia River Floodplain Mapping Update Study. The LRCA engaged the services of KGS Consulting Group to undertake an update to the Kaministiquia River Floodplain Mapping and Fill Regulated Areas. The project updates the existing models and maps to current standards using state of the art modelling, GIS techniques and LiDAR topography. The model takes into account structure and land changes since the last study was completed.
The updated studies and maps will be available for viewing at the Open House with LRCA staff and consultants from KGS Consulting Group and CDS Consulting available to answer any questions related to the Study.
The updated Kaministiquia River Floodplain and associated Fill Regulated Areas will be incorporated into the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority City of Thunder Bay, Geographic Township of Neebing, Screening Map-5, and Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge, Geographic Township of Paipoonge, Screening Map-3, which depicts the Approximate Regulated Area. Screening Maps are used by the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority for the administration of Ontario Regulation 97/04-180/06: Development, Interference with Wetlands and Alterations to Shorelines and Watercourses. Development within a LRCA Regulated Area requires a permit from the Authority.

Province Names New Chair of Lakehead Source Protection Committee
The Lakehead Source Protection Authority (SPA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Lucy Kloosterhuis as the new Chair of the Source Protection Committee (SPC) for the Lakehead Source Protection Area, effective September 24, 2019, replacing former Chair Bob Hartley who has retired from the role. The SPA would like to thank Bob Hartley for his commitment to the Source Water Protection program over the last 12 years, since the inception of the program.
The new Chair was chosen by the Honourable Jeff Yurek, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. The Source Protection Committee oversees the planning process to establish programs and policies to protect municipal drinking water sources in the Lakehead region, as called for under the Clean Water Act, 2006, and its regulations. The Lakehead Source Protection Plan was approved and became effective in October of 2013.
“I am very much looking forward to my new role as Chair of the Source Protection Committee and working with the Committee members, with whom I have built strong working relationships,” Ms. Kloosterhuis said. “Our Committee has shown a strong desire to protect our water supply and I look forward to working with all of our members to continue this commitment,” said Kloosterhuis.
As a respected community leader, Lucy’s past involvement with the SPC will be invaluable as she guides the Committee in its important responsibilities under the Clean Water Act. Lucy Kloosterhuis is Mayor of the Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge and had previously served a five-year term ending November 2018 on the Lakehead Source Protection Committee (SPC) as a Municipality representative member.
More information on the drinking water source protection program is available on the local Drinking Water Source Protection website: www.sourceprotection.net.

BOARDWALK CLOSED FOR SEASON
ATTENTION: The Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area boardwalk has been CLOSED for the season.
High lake levels and increasing winds have caused the waves to over-top the boardwalk, which will soon begin to freeze. We ask that, for your own safety, please respect the signage that has been placed on-site and refrain from using the boardwalk until further notice.
Thank you for your cooperation.
